To best describe what
DRM is? Is to tell you a true story of what happened to me!
Now as far as I am concerned
DRM is nothing but a virus that corrupts MP3’s!
What is
DRM (Digital Rights Management)? It is a virus that harms legitimate MP3 music customers. The
R.I.A.A. (THE RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) in it’s usual ignorant fashion came up with DRM as they say, “TO STOP THE PIRATING OF THEIR MUSIC!”
Which is a fine idea! Except for one problem? It dose absolutely nothing to stop music piracy except harm the legitimate customer. To help you to further understand exactly why
DRM is bad for the music biz and mostly for it‘s customers? I am going to tell you a true story about what happened to me and how I got burnt by
DRM!
I own 2 Microsoft
Zune players. 1 is a 8 gigabyte and another which is a 120 gigabyte. I actually like my Zune players. You Don’t only just play music on it. You can also play videos on it as well. It also comes with an easy to use software. Pictured above. With the software you can drag and drop all of your music easily on to your Zune player. It is very simple to use!
But my problem is not with the players or the software. It’s the Zune market place.
Zune offers a good variety of music and videos. From every form of music you can think of. But my problem is not with Zune’s subscription. My problem is that Zune Market place is loaded with the Virus Called
DRM!
Now I have no problem with them using
DRM to help them control their subscriptions. Zune offers a service called
ZUNE PASS for the price of a CD which they consider $14.99 a month. With the Zune pass you can download and put on your
Zune player and listen to thousands of songs. I thought this was great and I still do!! It is a hell of a deal!
Now I understand that because of their subscription service,
DRM is needed to keep track of what their subscribers are listening too and to make sure only their subscribers get all that music for that monthly fee. It’s only fair.
DRM is needed for that purpose only! This way they don’t have people signing up for a month only in order to download a thousand songs and then cancel and keeping them songs.
How it works is, When you cancel your service the
DRM stops the music from playing. That I understand. This is so people don’t end up getting a million songs for the price of $14.99! This I understand and accept it as a legitimate use for
DRM and it’s the only WAY that I accept the use of
DRM!
When I got my first Zune. Which I won in a contest. I already had a good MP3 collection. Enough to put a slight dent into the 8 gig player. Then I heard about the
ZUNE pass and of course I signed up to it. I actually liked it. I was able to download all the songs I liked and look for songs I have not heard in a long time. I really enjoyed my Zune pass.
Until I made my first purchase! Now with the Zune market place and a Zune pass you are able to download and place the songs on your
Zune player and they will work until you decide you no longer want to pay for Zune pass. Which again I really didn’t care. It was cool. For $14.99 a month it was alright by me!
I wanted to buy the eagles greatest hit in MP3 form. I already have the CD version of this album and I thought it would be nice to get a copy for my
Zune player. So I spent $13.43 and bought all 17 songs in MP3 format. Which I didn’t mind considering the CD cost about the same. So it was all good for me! I was happy with my purchase until………
This is where it gets really messed up and I learned my lesson that
DRM dose not work! I made the purchase and of course I immediately uploaded to my Zune players. I made 1 copy of the tracks to my 8gig player and another copy to my 120 gig player. No problems with that at this point. Everything was just fine.
Now I have been using computers for years and the one thing I always do no matter what! is I make back ups of everything. From my music and all my important files. I have learned to make weekly back ups out of horrible experiences where I have lost everything due to hard drive crashes. Anyone with any computer knowledge knows backing up your system is very important and it could save you hundreds of dollars.
So during my weekly back up, I of course backed up my MP3 collection like I always do. I have spent many hours and years and a lot of money on my collection and would hate to lose it over a hard drives crash.
Now I am always removing music and adding music to my 2
Zune’s all the time. About once a week I make changes to my Zune’s play list. My taste change from time to time and I like to try different songs ever so often so I am always toying around with my players and collections on them.
After I made my backups and disconnected my back up drive and store it on my shelf like always do. I went to reprogram my
Zune. Now few days before I had removed the eagles greatest hits from both my
Zune’s. actually I reformatted my two Zune’s and erased everything on them. Which is something I do from time to time. It is my player I have the right to do so.
So I reconnected my external drive which I use to store all my music on. I only have a small hard drive on my computer and a external Hard drive was the best way to preserve space on my computers hard drive. I began to reprogram the
Zune.
I started my Zune software and then I started to decided what I wanted on my player for that week. I finished programming my 8 gig player. Disconnected it and put it next to my stuff for work in the morning and I got the bug to listen to that eagles greatest hits album. So I went to play it.
I got a pop up saying I exceeded my allowed copy limit and I had to go to the website where I purchased it and purchase another licensed copy of the song. I sat there and wondered what was going on? so I went to the next song and the same pop up came on the screen. Again I tried another song and it said the same!
So I went back to the
Zune market place to find out what was going on and sure enough I found out that I had to spend another $13.43 to get another copy of those songs with another limit of only three copies. Of course after I found that out I seen red!! I was so angry about the whole thing. I felt like I was getting a major screw job. And yes I was.
What had happened is with the
DRM I only had the rights to make 3 copies of those MP3’s. I used up 2 of those allowed copies on both my Zune players and the third copy I made was to back it up. So after all that I used up all 3 of my so called copy rights to the songs I had already spent $13.43 on and the
R.I.A.A. wanted to scam another $13.43 out of me. I refused to pay it.
At this point i was stuck with 17 dead MP3 tracks and I got taken for $13.43 and they wanted to take me for another $13.43 and this my friends is what the R.I.A.A. calls
DRM (DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT).
Now as I said earlier, I have no problem with DRM on a subscription basis. But when I spend my hard earned money on something I don’t want any limitations. This was not part of the subscription it was a separate buy! When someone buys a song the
DRM should be stripped from it completely! I want to be able to play these songs when ever and on whatever I want. I should be able to make as many copies and back up those MP3’s up as much as I choose. After all I paid my $13.43 for that CD album damn it and I deserve better!
But the
R.I.A.A. (THE RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA) continues to insist that
DRM cuts down on music piracy. Piracy still runs rampant and the legitimate users continues to get screwed by
DRM no one wins with D.R.M. and it dose NOTHING to stop music piracy!
So the next time you make a MP3 purchase make sure the music site you are getting it from says that their MP3’s are D.R.M. free. I finally got a new copy of the eagles greatest hits on
Amazon.com, they offer MP3’s that are
DRM free. I will only Spend my money on
DRM free music sites!
